Why Your Business Needs More Than a Facebook Page

A Facebook page is rented land. A website is property you own. Here's why serious Kenyan businesses need both — and what happens to the ones that don't.

Walk through Nakuru town and ask ten business owners where customers can find them online. Eight will say Facebook or Instagram. One will mention WhatsApp. Maybe one has a website. That ratio is exactly why having your own website makes you stand out.

Social media is rented land

Your Facebook page lives on Facebook's terms. The algorithm decides who sees your posts — and organic reach for business pages has been shrinking for years. If your account gets restricted or hacked (it happens to Kenyan SMEs every single week), your entire online presence disappears overnight, along with years of reviews and followers.

A website is different. You own the domain. You own the content. Nobody can throttle it, suspend it, or put a competitor's ad on top of it.

What a website does that social media can't

  • Shows up on Google when someone searches "catering services Nakuru" — social posts mostly don't
  • Works 24/7 as a salesperson: services, prices, portfolio, booking form, all in one place
  • Makes you look established — customers trust a .co.ke domain more than a WhatsApp status
  • Collects leads you own: names, numbers, emails — not likes you can't contact
  • Lets you run one link everywhere: posters, business cards, Google Business Profile, socials

"But my customers are all on WhatsApp"

Perfect — a good website feeds WhatsApp. Every page should have a WhatsApp button that opens a chat with your number pre-filled. The website does the convincing; WhatsApp closes the deal. They're not competitors, they're a pipeline.

The realistic starting point

You don't need a 20-page corporate site. A sharp one-page site with your services, photos of real work, prices or price ranges, and a WhatsApp button will outperform 90% of what's out there. Start small, publish, then grow it.

A Facebook page makes you findable to people who already follow you. A website makes you findable to people who don't know you exist yet.
