WhatsApp Business API in Kenya: Cost per Message and How to Get It
Since 1 October 2026, Meta charges Kenyan businesses for service replies above 1,000 a month per number, on top of template message fees. Here's what each message type costs, how to get API access, and when you actually need it.
The WhatsApp Business app on your phone is free. The WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) is what you need for chatbots, shared team inboxes, automatic order updates and reminders at scale. It's charged per message, and Kenyan pricing changed on 1 October 2026.
WhatsApp Business cost per message in Kenya
- Service messages (your replies within 24 hours of a customer messaging you): the first 1,000 delivered each month per business number are free, then about KSh 0.52 each
- Utility templates (order confirmations, payment receipts, reminders): about KSh 0.52 each, and they don't count towards the 1,000 free
- Authentication templates (one-time codes): about KSh 0.52 each
- Marketing templates (offers and promotions): roughly KSh 3 each
- Meta's rates are set in dollars, change from time to time, and drop at high volumes. Check Meta's current rate card before you budget
How to get the WhatsApp Business API
- A Meta Business account, verified with your business documents
- A phone number that isn't already active on the WhatsApp app (or one you migrate off the app)
- Access through Meta's Cloud API directly, or through a Business Solution Provider that adds an inbox and tools
- Approved message templates for anything you send outside the 24-hour window
- A payment method on the Meta business account for message charges
Do you actually need the API?
If one or two people answer customers and you send a handful of updates a day, the free Business app with catalogues, quick replies and labels is enough. You need the API when several staff share one number, when you want a bot answering at 11pm, or when your system should send receipts and reminders automatically.
Keep message costs down
- Answer within the 24-hour window, because service replies are the cheapest messages
- Use utility templates for receipts and reminders, not marketing templates
- Send promotions to people who opted in and actually buy, not your whole contact list
We set up WhatsApp auto-reply bots from KSh 35,000, and booking and reminder flows from KSh 45,000, on the official platform, so your number isn't at risk of being banned.
