Google Is Answering Questions Without You: How to Get Your Business Recommended by AI
More Kenyans now get answers from AI — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, even WhatsApp bots — without clicking a single website. Here's how to become the business those answers mention.
Search is changing shape under our feet. Google now answers many questions directly with AI Overviews at the top of the page, and a growing share of Kenyans ask ChatGPT-style assistants instead of searching at all. Conversational queries — "tell me about..." — jumped 70% in Kenya in a year. For businesses, the question is no longer just "do I rank?" but "when AI answers, does it mention me?"
How AI decides who to recommend
AI assistants don't take ads (yet) — they synthesise what the public web says. They favour businesses that are unambiguous: a real website with clear services, locations and prices; consistent name and contact details everywhere; reviews on Google; and mentions on pages they trust. If the web barely says anything about you, AI has nothing to repeat — and it will confidently recommend your better-documented competitor instead.
The visibility checklist
- State the basics in plain text on your site — what you do, where you serve, price ranges. AI can't recommend what it can't parse from your homepage.
- Answer real questions on your pages — "how much does X cost in Kenya", "how long does Y take". Question-shaped content is exactly what AI quotes.
- Keep name, phone and location identical across your website, Google Business Profile and socials — inconsistency reads as unreliability
- Add structured data (schema markup) so machines read your pages as facts, not just text
- Accumulate Google reviews — AI answers lean heavily on review volume and ratings for "best X near me" questions
Don't panic about the clicks
Yes, AI answers mean fewer casual clicks. But the visitors who do click through arrive pre-sold — they saw you recommended and came to buy, not to browse. Kenyan businesses seeing traffic dips but steady enquiries are experiencing exactly this trade: less traffic, warmer traffic. Optimise for being the answer, and the quality of leads rises even where the quantity of visits falls.
The old game was ranking on a page of blue links. The new game is being the name the machine says out loud. Both are won the same way: be the clearest, best-documented answer.
