Branding on a Budget: Consistency Beats Flashiness

You don't need a KSh 200,000 rebrand. You need one logo, two colours, one font — used the same way everywhere, every time. Here's the discipline that makes small brands look big.

The businesses that look most professional in Kenya aren't the ones with the fanciest logos. They're the ones where the poster, the WhatsApp profile, the receipts, the staff T-shirts and the shopfront all clearly belong to the same company. That's consistency — and it's nearly free.

The minimum viable brand

  • One logo — with a proper version for dark backgrounds and one for light
  • Two colours — a main colour and an accent. Write down the exact codes.
  • One or two fonts — a headline font and a body font. Never more.
  • One tone of voice — decide if you're formal, friendly or playful, then stick to it

Where Kenyan SMEs break their own brand

The logo is a different shade of blue on every poster because each was made by a different Photoshop guy. The WhatsApp display picture is a blurry crop. The M-Pesa till poster uses fonts the brand has never seen. Individually small — together they whisper "improvised" to every customer.

The one-page brand guide

You don't need a 40-page brand book. One page: logo files, colour codes, font names, and three rules for how to use them. Share it with every designer, printer, and staff member who ever touches your marketing. This single document is the difference between a brand and a collection of posters.

Customers don't remember a clever logo. They remember seeing the same face, in the same colours, one hundred times.
