Agritech in Kenya: The Companies and Tools Farmers Actually Use
Kenya is one of Africa's agritech leaders, from mobile advisory and input marketplaces to farm management apps and digital payments. Here's the landscape, what actually reaches farmers, and where it's going.
Agritech in Kenya covers everything from SMS advice for smallholders to marketplaces linking farmers with buyers. The tools that last solve a farmer's problem cheaply, on an ordinary phone, without asking them to change everything at once.
The main kinds of agritech in Kenya
- Advisory: weather, planting and pest advice by SMS, voice, WhatsApp or app
- Input marketplaces: certified seed, fertiliser and agrovet products with delivery
- Market linkage: connecting farmers to buyers, aggregators and processors at fair prices
- Farm management: records of planting, inputs, yields, livestock and costs
- Finance and insurance: credit and cover based on farm data and M-Pesa history
- Dairy and cooperative systems: milk collection records and member payments
What actually reaches farmers
Many agritech pilots never scale because they assume smartphones, data bundles and time farmers don't have. The successful ones work through trusted people (extension officers, agrovets, cooperatives), accept M-Pesa, and pay for themselves in one season.
Agri OS: our approach
Agri OS is the agricultural operating system we're building from Nakuru County: one ecosystem connecting farmers, traders, suppliers and consumers, with an AI advisory layer at its core, and free for farmers.
